OA Wilderness Voyage: An Experience to Remember

Order of the Arrow High Adventure is an amazing opportunity available for all Arrowmen. With four different bases and five different treks, the possibilities and adventures are endless. Order of the Arrow High Adventure Northern Tier has two treks to explore, Canadian Odyssey and Wilderness Voyage. Both treks consist of two weeks at Northern Tier. The first week consists of working with Arrowmen nationwide to do trail restoration work. The second week consists of creating your trek through Northern Tier. Dozens of Arrowmen leave their mark on the trails every year, but what are some things Arrowmen do there? Join us as we hear a story from Sam Rogers on his trip to Northern Tier for Wilderness Voyage and one of the memories he made.

The sun setting over a lake at Northern Tier

“One of the most memorable moments from this summer was on the second day of our first voyage. I told my crew a rumor about an old downed float plane that was hidden away in a forgotten part of the woods, and they decided to take a trip into the past and find it. After a slow start to the day, we made our way to the secret cove of Sunday Bay on Crooked Lake.”

Sam had always wanted to go and explore the Great Northwoods and when the opportunity presented itself, he took it. Before he arrived, Sam heard the rumor of a float plane being lost in the woods. He told his crew about the rumor and they were off on an adventure led by their navigator. The crew searched and searched, but after walking through the dense overgrowth, the crew could not seem to find the downed plane. The crew regrouped and learned they were going in the wrong direction.

“After obtaining our new bearing, we moseyed our way over to the correct shore. As we approached my foreman partner pointed out an odd sight amongst the green scenery, it looked like something metal. I hopped out of the canoe and walked onto the shore pushing my way up to the metal object.  As I approached I shouted “This is it!”.  Sitting in front of me in all its decrepit and rusted glory, the rumored float plane. I signal the crew to come on over and take a look. We all speculated about how it got there, why it was left, and guessed how long it has been there.”

After getting the correct direction, the crew was on its way to find the deserted plane. Finally, they found it, completing an exciting journey through the woods. Sam and his crew went on an adventure that they will never forget, leaving with stories and experiences that will last a lifetime.
